Artist Statement
Advertising's omnipresent status
forces us to store vast amounts of corporate sponsored imagery and
auditory stimulus in our brains, a great deal of which is information
we will never use. As an artist I feel threatened by the manner
with which corporations usurp so many shapes and forms for use in
advertising. The same way we seem to be running out of telephone
numbers, the painter seems to be running out of abstract shapes
without a sponsor. Advertising manages to manifest itself in so
many of our thoughts and actions. Our vocabularies and languages
consist of terms, phrases, and melodies coined by corporations and
advertisers. Thus it is my intention to reclaim and revive the advertising
that litters our landscape by recreating these forms within the
conventions of abstract painting and drawing, literature, and sound.
To reclaim and revive advertising
imagery I appropriate and combine shapes from advertising logos
and brand names in order to build hybrid forms. For example I might
combine the "W" from Wittman's chocolates with the "I" from Sunkist
soda pop to make a composite shape. My next step is to render an
organic pattern within the interior space of this composite shape.
This pattern serves to create depth and character within otherwise
flat and ordinary shapes (logos and brand names), and to draw the
viewer in. In this manner I take visual information that is associated
with the public sphere and deposit it in a more personal realm.
I intend to create compositions
incorporating forms that seem familiar to my audience, but are not
completely identifiable. I hope these shapes will subtlety tug at
the strings of each viewer's visual memories but remain elusive.
